at Green City Farming’s R&D centre in Gothenburg, a simple experiment is underway: replacing disposable plastic shoe covers with reusable ones.
as part of the reCovers rental pilot, Green City Farming has been testing reusable shoe covers as an alternative to the blue single-use plastic covers commonly used when visitors enter controlled environments.
Green City Farming develops vertical farming solutions and regularly welcomes guests who want to learn more about the future of urban food production. because visitors move through the facility, shoe covers are used to help keep the environment clean.
traditionally, this means disposable plastic shoe covers used once and thrown away.
through the pilot with reCovers, the team is exploring whether reusable alternatives can fit naturally into their everyday operations.
early feedback has been positive.
as Mark Stribling, business developer at Green City Farming, explains:
“our visitors really like the reusable shoe covers. the solution fits very well into our everyday operations. it’s been easy to test and works very naturally in our environment.”
at Green City Farming, the covers are mainly used by visitors, since staff already wear dedicated work shoes inside the R&D facility.
six weeks into the pilot, feedback from our mid-term survey is encouraging:

they are reported as very easy to use

durability is rated very good, with the covers still looking almost new after weeks of use
when needed, the covers are simply washed and air dried, making the reuse system easy to integrate into daily routines.
disposable shoe covers are widely used in environments such as laboratories, food production facilities, clinics, and offices. while practical, they are typically used only once before being discarded.
pilots like this help us understand how reusable alternatives to single-use plastic can work in real operational environments.
